Marlow Suffer End of Term Itus Defeat at Buckingham
We had more than enough talent and ability on display to win this game comfortably, but Buckingham 'wanted' it more.
The celebrations at the end of the game by the Buckingham players and their home supporters said it all. Although there was nothing to play for, Buckingham were definitely up for this match, conversely we didn't treat it as seriously as we should have done. As a result, Buckingham were still in it at half time, then gained a lead in the 2nd half which left us too much to do by the end.
We had more than enough talent and ability on the pitch to make this a comfortable win, the pack was totally dominant at the scrum throughout the match, however we lacked the concerted composure and maturity to make the most of our strengths, and occasionally we suffered . We also suffered from two yellow cards, one in either half, that both seemed somewhat harsh.
In the first half, we had the opportunity to put the first points on the board, but unfortunately Nick Carvey completely miss kicked the ball. We then lost Will Fulton, to our first yellow card, and it allowed Buckingham to sneak ahead with three points. Even though we were down to 14 we showed what we were capable of, with Nick Carvey and George Jafari combining to score a lovely Try through the centre. We allowed Buckingham back into the game with a rather harsh Penalty, and then some poor tackling, which gifted them their first Try.
For the next 15 minutes we looked like we would take control of the match, with Converted Tries from Nick Gorham and Miles Noble, but just before the end of the half, again sloppy tackling, allowed Buckingham to peg us back, with a Try of their own.
Half Time 18 -23
The 2nd half started badly for us with two Converted Tries to Buckingham in the first 15 minutes. The 2nd was a beautifully judged cross field kick.
However, the next 10 minutes were all Marlow and we got back to within a point, with Tries from Nick Gorham and Hugo Jafari. What we needed to do now was play a mature controlled game, like we did against Bicester a few weeks earlier, and we would inevitably go on to score again, and win the match. However, instead of that, we played with increasing desperation, taking ever increasing risks which didn't pay off. Much to the delight of the Buckingham fans and as a result, Buckingham increased their lead with a Penalty kick, we lost Howard Mears to a Yellow Card, for not releasing, and finally, to add insult to injury, Buckingham got their Bonus Point Try on the last play of the game.
