Witney Take The Spoils Despite Marlow Leading at Half Time
Marlow Miss Out on Losing Bonus Point With Last Kick of the Game
The opening opportunities went to Marlow, but we failed to take any points. Even at this point in the game one had the feeling we might rue our inability to finish off such good attacking moves.
On 11 minutes Witney put the first points on the board when we they were awarded a penalty in front of our posts. 0-3
4 mins later they added to their tally when we failed to make our tackles stick. The Conversion was good. 0-10.
We finally got on the board ourselves, on 20 mins, when we were awarded a penalty for Witney going to ground at the ruck. Jamie Maddern making the kick.
We were now getting a grip on the game and Witney were showing signs of getting rattled. Our efforts were awarded with Nick Carvey scoring in the left corner, following up a kick bu Jamie Maddern. Jamie also made the Conversion. 13 - 10
Just before halftime Jamie added another 3 points after Witney were penalised for boring in at the scrum.
Half time 16-10
In recent games we have had the better of the second half, so there was some optimism that we might just be on the cusp of our first win of the season. Particularly as we were in the ascendancy at the end of the first half.
The 2nd half started well for us, with the ever increasing desperation of the Witney defence they were soon down to 14 men, and Jamie added another 3 points with an excellent penalty kick.
However this proved to be our high point, and as if to signal a change in fortunes Jamie missed the a penalty from 30m out, when Witney lost yet another player to a yellow card. We also lost George Jafari to injury.
Witney started to get back into the game with a penalty kick 16-13.
Then came the hammer blow when a kick down our right wing was picked up up the the Witney winger. Somehow he managed to slip passed 2 of our defenders tight to the touchline and went on to score under the posts. 16-20
From this point on we never looked like getting back into the game as Witney confidence was clearly starting to grow. Before the end of the game we incurred another 2 penalties that took away any chance of us snatching the win - which we never looked likely to achieve. 16 -26
However, just before the final whistle Witney gave away a penalty 25m out, giving us at least the chance to get a losing bonus point. Nick Carvey took responsibility for the kick, but he just failed to get it between the up rights.
