Marlow Win 11 Try Thriller Against Wimborne
Going down to 13 men in the 2nd half meant this game was much closer than it should have been.
Marlow started the match brightly spending the first 8 minutes in the Wimborne half, but handling errors stopped any really chance of getting any points. We also suffered an early blow with Chris Clarke, who has been having a very good season in the pack, hobbling off after only 6 minutes with an ankle injury. Curran McMillan coming on as replacement.
Fortunately, Wimborne were giving away plenty of penalties and eventually one of them was within clear cut kicking range. Sly opting to take a certain 3 points rather than gamble for more. Jamie Maddern duly did the job and put the first points of the match on the board. 3-0
However, our early lead was very short lived. Not for the only time in the match, Wimborne managed to regain possession of the ball from the kick off and a direct run from deep to the right side of the ruck, with a well timed pop pass off the base, was unstoppable and Wimborne scored under the posts, making the Conversion an easy extra 2 points. 3-7.
The Marlow line-out 'catch and maul' functioned well throughout the first half, yielding 3 Tries and 1 Conversion in a 15 minute period of Marlow dominance. Eddy Smyth got the 1st, Curran McMillan the 2nd and Stuart Silvester the 3rd. 20-7
It was a period of play in which, had we shown a little more composure with the final pass, we could easily have added several more Tries and been well out of sight by half time. Not to be out done by the dominance of the Marlow pack the Backs, lead by Jamie Maddern, were cutting a swath through the Wimborne midfield. We were helped by Wimborne going down to 14, just before our 3rd Try due to persistent offending, and some wayward passes from the Wimborne Backs which we took advantage of by intercepting. However, we contrived to reciprocate the favour on several occasions. Eventually the Backs got their reward, and the Bonus Point Try, with Cameron Denton going in under the posts. Jamie added the extras. 27-7.
Just before half time Wimborne took the gloss off a dominant Marlow display, with a very simple kick and chase by their quick Left Winger who easily outpaced our defence and scored unopposed in the corner. Their Fly Half was unable to add the Conversion.
Half Time 27-12
Initially it looked like the 2nd half would go the same way as the first, with Jamie Maddern adding our 5th Try with a lovely jinking run to side step the Wimborne defence and score from 15m out. He added the Conversion. 34-12
A few minutes later a loose pass allowed Wimborne to all to easily add their 2nd Try in the right corner. 34-17
However, their indiscipline helped us out with their 2nd yellow card of the match and the opportunity to add 2 more penalties, which Jamie took full advantage of. 40-17.
This was the point in the match when things changed quite dramatically. Firstly, we went down to 14 when the Ref gave Curran McMIllan a yellow card for not rolling away. We also lost Nick Spicer to a head injury. This prompted several changes, including Scott Golding coming on for Philip Helmuth. Then a slightly unlucky high tackle by Stuart Jordan earned him a yellow card and we found ourselves down to 13, and with our backs to the wall. Since Wimborne had managed to get some points on the board, even though we had been so dominant up to this point, they suddenly sensed an opportunity to not only get a Try Bonus point but even possibly take the match. Something which had looked so unlikely a few minutes before. They upped their intensity significantly and the final 15 minutes of the match was pretty much all Wimborne. They scored 3 Tries in 10 minutes, and could have scored another but for some supreme last ditch Try line defence by the 13 Marlow players still on the pitch.
It was a massive relief when the Ref blew the final whistle.
