Marlow back to winning....
Last game Thursday 26 April 7.30pm KO at Marlow- Please come and support the lads!
Marlow travelled to Bracknell for their penultimate game and on the hottest day of the season (by far). A try BP win was the target though the heat and the lumpy (nay, very lumpy) pitch would add to that pressure.
Marlow started brilliantly though, with holes found and support runners flooding through. Our first try within 5 mins came from a solid break out, support play and patient phases. From a quick tap penalty we moved it quickly right with good hands for Tom Asplin to squeeze in at the corner. An immaculate touch line conversion took us to 7-0.
Quite quickly though, Harvey broke out of our own 22, fed Max who was felled on half way. The ball was recycled quickly though with Nick Spicer running a sharp line off Jamie to get to their 22, before finding James Forsyth on the inside in support to score. Extras added again, 14-0. Target achievable?
Barnesy was nicking a few lineouts and they really struggled to get hold of the ball. Our next try was a similar pattern, pen to lineout, ball retained well through phases and Harvey hitting a hole to stroll in. 21-0. And into half time
(slightly extended to cool down the ref and unstick his molten Lycra).
The bench was almost emptied at half time, with fluids being taken on by fire hose and ice packs use more for cooling than swelling reduction.
It took a while then for us to secure the try BP, some phase play including a chip and regather and just went it looked as if we were fizzling out and passes going astray, Harvey gathered and danced through a crowd to cross for his second. 28-0 and job done.
Or was it? We would of course need to win the game...and Bracknell strung a few phases of their own together to release their flying winger for his first. We maybe through complacency or the heat dropped off tackles and they busted through again. 28-14.
With nothing to lose they were running from everywhere, and again the gas man found space, before beating 2 covering defenders, to score again. 28-21. Surely a draw or worse for Marlow was not going to happen??
The bench was unloaded again, and started to sure things up. The win effectively secured by opting to kick a pen, slotted by Freddie Lewis from 27m in front. (Jamie clearly having been rested soooooo much earlier Mrs M if reading, close to half time I’d imagine) 31-21.
But still the game continued, with Bracknell awarded 2-3 pens with the clock red. As they looked to release Billy Whizz again, Freddie managed to intercept a ball on their 22, and running on a treacle covered travelator scrambled over as the cover came in, getting up to convert his own try.
Job done, game won with a try BP, 38-21 final score. Great effort in that heat. Some empty tanks today from the lads and much rehydration needed.
PotD- in club house later awarded to Harvey Hendry, some outstanding breaks, cover tackles and 2 tries. (Quickly passing his pint of pain to Stroudy for the race off).
DotD - (their tradition), despite some great lines off 10 himself, awarded to Nick Spicer for a wholly crap pass (off one of those busts) when a try stroll in beckoned. (Similarly passed off to Lewis Ashworth)
WTF of the day- Clip to follow - Matt Worman’s head stand in a ruck.....
Stato of the day: Every kick at goal was successful today, 8 conversions and one penalty, some touchline efforts! (‘fascinating’.... said the front row in unison)
Maidenhead won their cup match today, so their already congested end to season just got worse. They still have 3 league and at least one cup match to go.
We play Bracknell again for our finale on thu night. Followed by a curry and a few shandies.
Last game too for the U18 guys...
Our next job is another try BP win, and the rest is up to others. The league title dream is still alive!
