Banbury in the OBB lge (game 3)
HUGE heart to get back to 22-22, but couldn't finish it off (but gain try BP)
Banbury Marlow OBB (game 3) - 20 Jan 17
After a frosty morning locally, we endured the long drive North to Banbury a route occasionally through Northamptonshire, before landing back in the flat lands of Oxfordshire.
Suffice to say there wasnt too much energy in the warm up, and into the game Banbury scored with their first possession after we had received the ko but adjudged ahead of the clearance kick chase. They kicked for the lineout at the corner, and a smart front peel saw a bulldozer run over our front defender. 5-0
They grew in confidence and twice scored wide right, 17-0, and our backs truly against the wall.
Credit therefore for our phase play, with Travis Pretlove crashing over wide right, and extras impressively added by Freddie Lewis, 17-7 and belief restored. They were YC’d for multiple pens (and same guy not rolling away). Though they would score next, again wide right for the wing’s first half hat-trick. 22-7
We came back though, our own pen drilled into the corner and maul set up and moving forward nicely before Harry Yeomans darted over in the corner. 22-12 and half time.
Their big pack was tiring quickly. Could we exploit?
Now awake and firing we scored next, after concerted pressure, Banbury, having turned the ball over inside their 5m, played rugby roulette, before spilling and in the scamble, Freddie Lewis fell on the ball to score, and slotted the extras, 22-19.
And back we came again, and with pressure exerted, were awarded a pen 15m outside their 22, which Freddie Lewis confidently kicked, and 22-22.
What a recovery!
The back row of Travis, Kyran Townsend and Harry Fryer offering themselves as carriers all day. Jack barnes a few break outs despite a heavy cold, and one try adjudged short though clearly initially on the line (and scored) from our side view.
Sadly a pen was awarded against us for an alledged late tackle, though player fully committed, and from a quick tap their supporting runner strolled in. And another break out saw them cross out wide Left, 34-22.
Game still winnable, but a dropped ball and hack on put us under pressure, great cover from Travis and Oly Frisby (one a few great cover tackles, and a few strong carries for his best game of the season), and the clearance kick was loose and in-field run back to score. 41-22.
We were now playing for a try BP (for 4 tries), and duly delivered. Freddie dancing deep into the 22 before Travis powered over from wide left. Extras again added, 41-29.
Banbury scored to finish things. 48-29 and final score.
The lads will learn more from this than 55-0 win last week. HUGE spirit to get back to 22-22. But defensively we were too passive at times, and didnt number off and hence stripped out wide. This comes from a few not holding their position in the line or pushing forward. With tired bodies in the final 20 we missed one:one tackles.
Training at home next week, before game 4 of OBB home v Maidenhead.
Tries: (4 and BP)
