Friendly home v A&C
By AL LEWIS
Only game 2 together
squad of 24 lads gathered for the visit of A&C in what turned out to a sunny affernoon, a huge swing from the mid week predicted 45mph winds and rain.
We started strongly receiving the ball at the kick off with the breeze at our backs, and quickly went through our phases, retaining the ball well and making ground up the pitch.
Everyone was making contribitions and prepared to carry. The first score was only a matter of time, though it took us time to eventually get there due to a few dropped passes when pressure was building nicely. We then lost James from the centres a shame as he was carrying well and tackling bravely.
The try though came from Oly, after a pen taken as a short lineout, and a nice maul to hit the hard running centre off 9. Extras missed, but 5-0.
And we would score the next too, a similar build up of sustained pressure, and solid ball retention before Abdul barrelled over down the left. Extras added by freddie, for 12-0.
Some subs were added just before HT to keep the energy high.
A&C had their moments in our 22, but with a dominant scrum and committed D we held out, notable tackle from Luke against their big 8. And half time.
A&C scored after HT, sything through after a tap pen. 12-7.
But we kept at it, and again from solid pressure in their 22, we worked the ball left, before a lovely offload from Luke put Tom Findlay in the corner. - see video (His first try after a few seasons out). Extras missed from wide left into the wind, 17-7.
More subs, and trying to get 8 back row into 3 slots....always fun.
Then perhaps inevitably, we leaked 2 softish tries from indifferent tackling and a loss of shape, and suddenly 17-19 down. And tails up.
As A&C pressed again, Stan plucked out an intercept pass to scamper 50m, though extras missed, 22-19.
So the ding dong continued, A&C scored next, 22-26.
But with great heart we won ball deep in their 22, one then to short pen lineout, and sustained pressure. With phases and patience again we worked the ball to space, 3v2, for Zac to score what would be the winning try. 27-26.
Many solid contributions and the drop offs fixable with sustained training numbers and attendance to cement organisation.
full time 27-26 (5T 1c - 4T 3c)
