OBB League game - Marlow v Beaconsfield
By AL LEWIS
(looking for fresh start after snow postponed game last week)
OBB - Marlow v Beaconsfield 10 Feb 19
A good and large squad mustered after the morning rain for our next league game having missed one last week with the snow.
We were missing James Sarney (inj) and Dan Mussett (family do) but after an intense warm up, started strongly enough and far improved on some other days.
Beaconsfield were to score first, a decent break and finish after a missed 1:1 tackle from an otherwise ok line. 0-5.
Our scrum was also very solid today, and only blustery passes halting momentum at times. Both centres, Luke Mantle and Oly Frisby carried strongly all day, and it was a hard line off a set scrum that saw Oly smashing over to equalise. 5-5.
Will Wright had a huge game carrying and in contact.,
The game ebbed and flowed, but our defensive stood firm. And half time.
Beasonfield would score early after half time, and pen kick to line out, saw a maul, and whilst the ball was dropped in the maul (normally a knock on) from result play and scramble they crashed over 5-12.
We came back well and deep in their 22, and consecutive pens, we had a quick tap tackled at point of tap (and clearly not 10m) and perhaps as only 7m from the try line, on another day a YC might have come for such a blatant offence. However, we opted for a scrum from that pen and whisked the ball out left for the returning Ben Mitchell to cross. 10-12 and so in the game.
The final 2 tries were not ours. The first after a 50m dash (from obvious slap down on half way), and after a first scrum we snatched against the head, collapsed, and re-set, they couldnt finish wide right under stoic pressure (and should have been penalised for holding on to ball) we were taken back to a very technical pen (materiality?) for a binding infringement. They eventually darted over close to a ruck. 10-17 and hugely frustrating. The final try another calamitous scramble, and after a postal questionnaire and on-line survey, the score awarded to last man lying on the floor. 10-24
We finished again deep in their 22, but couldnt finish or find enough holes.
Plenty of positives. Far improved intensity. Feels like one that got away or was within our grasp to get more from. (Ref even said later score flattered them..,right sir, and you didnt aid that?)
